21.01.2010: Cocomms combats against poverty and social exclusion

Year 2010 is the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. In Finland, the campaign's benefactor is the president of the republic of Finland Tarja Halonen. Cocomms contributes to the campaign by taking care of media relations in cooperation with European Commission Representation in Finland, The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health and National Institute for Health and Welfare.

Almost 80 million people across the EU currently live below the poverty threshold. Many of them are unemployed, homeless and without education. Too often those who have weakest situation in the society suffer the most of the economic downturn's consequences. Nearly nine out of ten europeans are waiting for urgent action by their government to eliminate poverty.

The European Year for Comabating Poverty and Social Exclusion takes place in 29 countries that each have their own national program. People in a situation of poverty and social exclusion are recognised to have a voice. The target is to reach a wide audience and question the stereotypes of poverty and social exclusion.
In Finland, the slogans of the European Year are Rakennetaan yhteiskunta kaikille and Stop köyhyys!. The National Institute of Heath and Welfare coordinates implementation of the European Year in Finland.

The campaign has ambassadors who give a voice and face for the campaign. Finnish ambassadors are Elisabeth Rehn, Fatbardhe Hetemaj, Maria Guzenina-Richardson, Ristenrauna Magga, Rainer Friman, Heikki Hursti, Wilson Kirwa, Kalle Könkkölä, Teemu Lehtilä, Olavi Sydänmaalakka ja Kari Väänänen.

The European Year started during Spain's EU presidency in January 21, 2010 in Madrid.
